Can the cracking of a hazelnut between your teeth or the slow, persistent crushing of a carrot remind you of moments of resistance?
What is a hammer doing on a conference table?
In past artistic (self-)education formats, we have observed how little trust we had in contradictions and friction. We often wanted to avoid unforeseen conflicts or unstructured, unmoderated moments. Now we realise that it is precisely in these cracks and gaps that deeper engagement, radical co-creation and new spaces of possibility can emerge.
With this in mind, we invited the participants of Gathering Knowledge in the Gaps Between Our Teeth to approach the possibilities that gaps and cracks offer in learning processes through airy textures, cracking sounds and ambivalent flavours. Peeling, piercing and twirling vegetables, we questioned the powerful and capitalist manifestations of productivity that permeate institutional learning environments and talked about how we can change them. Using the relational table/ feast of frictions method, we invited participants to put together a feast, reflecting on their communal spaces and practices that had the power to create alternative environments and foster solidarity and support within rigid institutional structures. Whether it was a self-organised collective, a regulars' table, a protest, an intervention, an angry lunch, a film night or an open letter, we wanted to capture the essence of these moments and share them with others.
